Heffron Drive — aka Kendall Schmidt and Dustin Belt — were one of the many celebs that came together for Tubeathon on Wednesday, April 20th at the iHeartRadio Theater in Los Angeles.
The event served as an early kick-off to the American Red Cross’ 2016 Giving Day on April 21st, a one-day fundraising effort designed to increase public emergency preparedness awareness and raise funds for the Red Cross and its mission to help families who have been affected by disasters such as home fires.
Celeb Secrets caught up with Kendall and Dustin on the red carpet at Tubeathon this week. We chatted with the duo about their recent tour, their single “Rain Don’t Come,” Coachella, and Kendall’s former BTR band members. Check it out below!
Celeb Secrets: You just released a track called “Rain Don’t Come,” — what can you tell us about it?
Kendall Schmidt: “It’s a really different kind of song. It has some really cool music elements. It has live flute, it has a ngoni which is a West African instrument. It’s musically diverse. It’s almost like that period after The Beatles took some drugs and had some really weird music. It’s kind of like that except the drugs obviously. So we just decided to do something different and now I think we’re the only performers here who have a song with a flute in it. You got to stand out!”
Dustin Belt: “If there’s a another band here with a flute in it, I’m going to be really surprised!”
Celeb Secrets: You guys have been on the road for all your shows, how’s that experience been?
Kendall Schmidt: “It’s awesome! We’ve done a lot of international shows which is amazing. Italy was insane and our popularity really exploded with the band. We’ll be going back again so it’s never ending with Italy which is amazing! It’s not a bad place, but you legitimately gain weight. I thought it was a joke, but you really do. We have some stuff in France and Latin America coming up. It’s good to play shows around the world. That’s what it’s all about!”
Celeb Secrets: Is that what you can say influenced the new song?
Kendall Schmidt: “Yes, the only place we didn’t go was West Africa. I would’ve loved to have gone there and  learned about the ngoni. But that is what influenced the song. Just being into different types of music and just wanting to be different really.”
Celeb Secrets:Â Logan hopped on your tour and performed a few shows, right? How was it like performing with him again?
Dustin Belt:Â “Horrible! I’m just kidding. Logan is so much fun and he’s one of our best friends. Having him there was so much fun.”
Kendall Schmidt:Â “Plus, we played like hundreds of shows together so it’s just like old times. Being on the road, he definitely brought in a lot of energy and spunk. It was really nice to have him there.”
Dustin Belt:Â “I remember when we left for tour, he was like, ‘I don’t want you guys to introduce me when I come on stage. I just want to run on stage like I’m a rapper,’ and we were like okay sure. So we never introduced him. He would just come out and say, ‘What’s going on everybody?!’. He was always intense which was typical Logan.”
Celeb Secrets:Â Have you heard his new music yet?
Kendall Schmidt:Â “Dustin has, but I haven’t. Logan is a really secretive kind of guy and there’s no reason he wouldn’t play it for me yet, but I feel kind of left out. We’re going to Coachella weekend 2 so hopefully I’ll hear it then. I’m going to force him to play music for me!”
Celeb Secrets: Who are you most excited to see at Coachella?
Dustin Belt:Â “Our friend is actually the drummer for Gallant and apparently he’s getting a ton of press right now. Billboard named them The #1 Performance to Not Miss at Weekend 1 so we’re stoked to see him and his band. That’s going to be fun! Zedd is always cool and The 1975 is always good.”
Kendall Schmidt:Â “I’m excited for Rhye. I just recently got into them and I think those guys have got the coolest, smoothest voices.”
Dustin Belt:Â “Even if you don’t know who all the artists are, it’s always fun hearing new music.”
Celeb Secrets: James is here in the building tonight, do you guys still keep in contact?
Kendall Schmidt: “Yes, I’m actually wondering where he is because I was looking for him when I was in there. I didn’t text him like, ‘See you later’. I’m just waiting to run in to him. Im going to be like, ‘OMG, you’re here too!?’.”
Dustin Belt: “We’ll go and wait in the bathroom. He’s bound to go in there at some point.”
Kendall Schmidt:Â “Hopefully we’re not wearing the same outfit because one of us going to have to change. ”
