'We went to Lidl to find the viral 14.99 trainers - and noticed one annoying detail' - Rachel Will

Its viral collection of merchandise flew off shelves back in 2021 as shoppers flocked to get their hands on shoes and clothes in the supermarket's iconic colours.

And now Lidl is back with a brand new collection - including a fresh new rebrand of those sell-out trainers.

Initially delighting shoppers when they first dropped the supermarket's unique, brightly coloured trainers were the surprising hit of the year as fans raced to stores to get them. In fact, the £12.99 trainers were so popular that they sold out in every store almost as soon as they arrived, with some shoppers flogging them on eBay on for up £1,000.

Considering their rather surprising popularity, you can imagine shoppers' enthusiasm to hear the news that the trainers would be making a comeback this week with a new twist.

To celebrate the new launch, Shopping Writer Rachel Williams decided to pop to her local Lidl branch on Hutcheon Street here in Aberdeen on Thursday just to see if she could get her hands on a pair for herself. Here's how she got on...

It is officially Thursday morning and, for many fans of Lidl, myself included, that means that it is another day to make a trip for the supermarket's famed 'Middle Aisle' section.

New and exciting offers arrive every Sunday and Thursday, similar to rival Aldi, but today is special as the supermarket finally brought back Lidl's iconic merchandise - including those sell-out trainers.

As fans are known to flock to the supermarket for any of their famed 'Middle Aisle' items almost immediately, I decided to try and bypass any queues by getting their bang on 8am, which is when the store opened.

After driving down, imagine my surprise to find the car park completely empty and not a single line in sight, which, to be fair, I'll take it as a good sign as it means I might get a chance of snapping up the trainers.

Heading in pretty much a couple of minutes after the doors opened, I immediately flocked to the middle aisle section to see if I could find any of the new Lidl by Lidl 2023 merch without having to battle someone for it.

First things first, I spotted the trainers almost immediately and was genuinely happy to find that there was quite a massive selection in-store.

The trainers themselves are now priced at £14.99, a £2 increase from last year, and they are now white with hints of Lidl's iconic logo colours - red, blue and yellow. Dare I say that the new minimal look makes them look smarter than last year's bold option?

Apart from one other shopper, I was the only other person there looking for the trainers and, despite the amount of stock in, I was genuinely disappointed to find that there were either no ladies sizes, or even smaller sizes - well, not that I could find.

Despite being labelled as "Ladies Lidl Trainers" on the shelf, I found that the vast majority of the pile of trainers were mens size 9s, and I even tried rummaging to the bottom of the pile, but no luck. Considering I wear a ladies size 7, I think even I would have struggled to wear them.

It was quite a shame because the trainers do actually look a little neater than last year with their clean white colour and hints of the iconic Lidl logo. Honestly, the minimal look is working for them and I can see these being even more popular than last year.

Disappointment aside, it is worth remembering that it wasn't just the trainers that dropped in stores today, as the entire new Lidl x Lidl 2023 merch was available for shoppers to buy from as low as £1.99.

You want to recreate the classic socks and sliders combo for the summer? Then look no further than Lidl as the Aberdeen branch was packed full of the adult's sliders for £4.99 and Lidl branded socks for just £1.99.

There were also quite a few of the £4.99 Lidl branded adult t-shirts that feature the iconic supermarket's logo on the back - though, unlike the trainers, there were more womens sizes left than mens.

And, to top it all of, you can really complete your beachwear look with a pair of mens swim shorts for £5.99 and mini beach balls £2.99, both which feature the supermarket's logo.

Despite the sheer amount of new Lidl merch that was in stock this morning, I have to sigh a little that the trainers were the only ones that weren't available in my size.

You can shop the new Lidl x Lidl 2023 merch in-stores now where you can also find the £14.99 trainers - you might have more luck than me. Remember to check with your store for stock availability, as with all 'Middle Aisle' items, once they are gone, they are gone.
